Physical Education

The goal of the Physical Education program at PRIS is to increase physical fitness, develop a healthy body image, strengthen individual self-esteem, to improve sport related skills and knowledge of games and to empower all students to sustain regular physical activity as a foundation for a healthy, productive and fulfilling life.

Physical Education classes are designed to fulfill the growth, development, behavior and health related fitness needs of each child. I believe that the early years provide a critical opportunity for the growth and mastery of skills that form the basis for later sports and the life-long pleasure in physical activities.

ECC (Early Childhood Center)
The ECC program emphasizes developmentally appropriate activities based in play while improving basic movement skills. Enjoyment is essential to learning, especially for young children. A safe, active and stimulating environment is created to maximize learning.
Aquatics
The aquatics component at PRIS is based on the AustSwim Program and the American Red Cross (ARC) and it is adapted to suit personal needs. The goals of the swim program are to encourage the development of the student’s confidence in the water, increase students awareness and understanding of the need for water safety and to encourage the development of swimming strokes and water skills.
Other Units: gymnastics/tumbling, gross motor skill development, throwing and catching, kicking and striking, dance and movement, movement and games.
Special Activities: PRIS Friendship Games and Kids Triathlon.

Elementary Physical Education- Grades 1-5
The elementary program emphasizes developing a broad foundation of motor skills for all students while fostering respect and responsibility for others and self. Students at this level find time for experimentation, practice, and decision making about all movement possibilities. The development of personal health and fitness habits also begin during the elementary years focusing on concepts of human wellness, lifetime activity and personal habits.
Aquatics
The aquatics component at PRIS is based on the American Red Cross (ARC) and the Australian Learn to Swim, but it is adapted to suit personal needs. The goals of the swim program are to encourage the development of the student’s confidence in the water, increase students awareness and understanding of the need for water safety and to encourage the development of swimming strokes and water skills. Students will be tested on swim skill checklists adapted from the ARC. Each level will test on personal water safety skills, buoyancy; breathe control and underwater swimming, and swimming stroke skills.
Cross-Fit Kids

Cross Fit Kids is a constantly varied exercise program designed to improve total body fitness. It can be described as “functional fitness”. Students will be working hard to improve strength, balance, cardiovascular fitness, and flexibility while having a great time!

PAW@S Health
All students Preschool through grade 5 will take health. This class will focus on friendships, conflict resolution, and improving listening skills.

Cooperative and Team Building Games, Volleyball, Swimming, American Football, Soccer, Basketball, Baseball, Kickball, Tennis, Table Tennis, Badminton, Dance, Hockey, Frisbee, Bowling, Gymnastic/Tumbling, Cup Stacking, Jump Rope, and Hula Hoops.
Special Activities: P.E. Challenge (grades 4-5), PRIS Friendship Games and Kids Triathlon.

Middle School Physical Education
MS students will spend more time refining the movement patterns and fundamental skills for team games and individual sports. Developing a positive attitude, working in groups and demonstrating sportsmanship are also emphasized. Ultimately, the goal is for students to take personal responsibility in practicing healthy habits and engaging in regular physical activity.

Health will be taught throughout the school year. Health education gives students the knowledge and skills to examine alternatives and make responsible health-related decisions. Students will work with a couple of programs called "Second Step" and “Big Changes, Big Choices.”

PLAYER POSITIONS- GENERAL GUIDELINES
1. If you are playing on the left side of the field, stay on that side. Same for the right. If the ball comes into your area, play the ball. Do not move and follow the ball around the field.
2. If you are playing defense, it is a good idea to not go forward past half field.
3. Try to form triangles with players on your team- that way you will have many passing options.
4. The lines are out in soccer.
5. "off sides" is when you are in the other teams half, ahead of the ball.

SWIMMINGPart of the swim program is to improve basic stroke technique. Watching someone perform a skill correctly will help you to see what you need to practice.


Notice the angle of the swimmers head and that he keeps his arm on the surface- long body position for a long as possible.
